Chabret—expert makers of The Chopping Block since 1885
Since 1885, Chabret chopping blocks have set the standard among chefs, restaurants, and home cooks alike. Renowned in France for their end-grain wooden boards, they're expertly crafted by passionate cabinetmakers in Saint-Bonnet-le-Château, deep in the Loire Valley.
It all starts deep in the Jura forests
The Chabret team begin by selecting timber with a fibre density well above average—always the finest cuts. What follows is a matter of skill, care and tradition. The technique? End grain. Each block is cut across the grain, then pieced together, one by one, to form The Chopping Block.
A one-of-a-kind design, created in-house by the Atma team
We designed our own Chopping Block with Atelier Chabret. After rounds of testing, we settled on an end-grain board in a chequerboard motif — crafted from beech and walnut. The blend is spot-on: subtle, yet striking. For the design, we chose bold square blocks, set slightly off-centre, bringing a modern edge and texture to the piece.
Questions you might have
Should I do anything to my Chopping Block before first use?
Before you use your Chopping Block for the first time, rub a tablespoon or two of neutral cooking oil (try sunflower or grapeseed) over every surface with a clean cloth. Skip olive oil – it makes the wood tacky.
How do I clean and care for my Chopping Block?
For a quick clean, a damp cloth does the trick to look after your Chopping Block. Don’t get it too wet or the wood may swell — and never leave it soaking in water.
We also recommend oiling your Chopping Block every 30 to 60 days with a neutral oil. Skip the olive oil; it leaves the surface sticky.
Is the end-grain Chopping Block scratch- and cut-resistant?
Absolutely. The end-grain construction of our Chopping Block means the wood fibres are more tightly packed and stand vertically. So the surface is denser, tougher, and naturally self-healing. It’s the sort of accessory you’ll use for years
